Important updates and advice regarding coronavirus (Covid-19)

If you only attend one event this winter...

DCP-blog-cove_20191107-162727_1

Over the last 12 years, more than 10,000 customers have attended our annual series of winter events. While we've always covered the latest innovations in precision farming, this year I'm thrilled to say that we'll be sharing some of our most varied and forward-thinking content to date.

From November through to February, we're travelling the breadth of the UK to talk all things digital crop production as part of a series of half-day events. As with previous years, we'll be sharing the latest in precision technology including our research, industry developments and the latest updates to our own tools and applications. However, in a first we'll also be sharing the floor with colleagues from Frontier Agriculture and Kings Crops

Next time you log into MySOYL...

SOYL-Frontier-Agricultural-3304
I was recently speaking to a SOYL customer on the phone as he logged back into MySOYL for the first time in a few months. As I talked him through the steps, he hesitated when he got to the main dashboard after logging in. "What do all these other buttons do?" he queried. He was referring to some of the other applications available alongside MySOY...

Variable rate drilling payback

_SYL0926
When it comes to drilling your next crop, do you consider the evenness of establishment in previous years and the consistency of your return on investment for each field? The inherent variability in soil type in most fields makes variable rate seed drilling a sensible option and the potential for strong payback via yield gain means that adopting th...

The Variable Rate Seed myth

OSR-drilling
We introduced variable rate seed over 15 years ago and the benefits, including that of a yield increase of 4.2% over flat rate drilling, are well documented . However, every now and then I come across individuals who think that doing variable rate seed avoids the need for variable rate applications of nitrogen. This is a myth. Where did the myth co...

There is still value in your old precision farming data

SOYL-Frontier-Agricultural-3304
Each year a number of new customers come to us with some existing precision farming data. However, while they may still have it, they are not always sure how useful it may be still be. Such data is typically either soil zone data or yield map data, and will have often been sold to the farmer over a number of years but never fully utilised. While it...

Variable rate nitrogen benefits

map
There can be confusion around the benefits of variable rate nitrogen. In fact, I was talking to a consultant just this week who is new to precision farming and he was discussing the perceived cost savings from variable rate nitrogen. I gave him a clear message and one that I think is worth sharing here. "Don't expect to save money through using les...

Can we support your event? An open invitation to the industry

There's a saying that there's no such thing as a free lunch and while that might be true, there is such a thing as a free presentation on the very latest in precision farming techniques and tips. It is the time of year when I and other senior members of the SOYL team spend a lot of time presenting to growers around the country. We have always enjoy...

P and K management for high-yielding crops

FRONTIER-0035
Recently, I drew up a number of medium term nutrient strategies for clients. This inspired me to put down some of my thoughts around this topic in writing. Across the SOYL client base growers who maintain a robust and thorough approach to phosphate (P) and potassium (K) applications are those who consistently achieve high yields. I sometimes h...
