Rare export of wheat from Scotland today

mv velox 311x207The attached photographs show the MV Velox, being loaded with wheat at Peterhead harbour earlier today.

Even though Aberdeenshire is a significant producer of wheat, export of this grain from Scotland is a very unusual event. This is certainly the first time Frontier has shipped wheat from a Scottish port.

The MV Velox will be loaded with 3,300 tonnes of Aberdeenshire farmers' feed wheat which is destined for Rotterdam.

Nick Baxter, Trader for Frontier says, "I've been in the grain trade for 33 years and this is the first time I can recall export of wheat from Peterhead. Because this year saw a particularly large crop of wheat in Scotland, we have a small surplus of wheat stock left at the end of the season, which is very unusual. With prices for later in the year currently lower, we have found a market for our farmers overseas, which attracts a better price for them.  Removing this surplus from the market now will help to support prices for our farmers as we move into the next crop year."'

The boat will set sail later today once loading is complete.
